Peel Family Education Centre (often called "Family Education Centre" or "FEC") is a non-profit organization that enriches the quality of life for families through community based parent-to-parent education, support and training.
Family Education Centre was originally called the Chinguacousy Family Education Centre and was started in 1973 by a few parents (the Parent Education Committee) whose kids were enrolled in the Bramalea Coop Nursery school. They felt parenting was very important and journeyed to Toronto to the Adler Institute to learn how to lead parent study groups. Up until this time Peel Health provided parenting courses to the community. These parents co-led with the Public Health Nurse mentors to hone their skills. As the organization developed, a board of directors was formed. This board met each month in each other’s homes to plan and implement parenting programs. They began offering parenting courses not only at the Co-op but in the community in churches, recreation centres, schools, women’s shelters, etc. The parent to parent model continues to this day where parents lead discussion groups, encourage the sharing of knowledge and help parents build skills based on a collaborative and communal goal of positive, proactive parenting. Trillium Funding was received in 1984 and the organization became incorporated as the Peel Family Education Centre. Along with support from the Sheridan College Institute of Technology, United Way and Region of Peel funding was received and the organization was able to form many other partnerships in the community with the Region of Peel, the Ontario Early Years Centres, the Vanier Centre for Women in Milton, the Afghan Women’s Organization and St. John Fisher Neighbourhood Centre to name a few.
Family Education Centre continues to work with our existing partnerships to consistently enrich the lives of families in Peel. Our programs are available to specific audiences through these partnerships, and to the general public in Peel and surrounding areas through in person courses and workshops, and through our online programs.
Family Education Centre uses Adlerian principles to encourage positive family relationships and our values reflect this. At Family Education Centre we promote family wellness through parent to parent education, support and training. According to renowned psychologist Alfred Adler, when we feel encouraged, we feel capable and appreciated and will generally act in a connected and cooperative way. When we are discouraged, we may act in unhealthy ways by competing, withdrawing, or giving up. It is in finding ways of expressing and accepting encouragement, respect, and social interest that help us feel fulfilled and optimistic. All our courses and workshops help parents develop tools and skills that address children's behaviour in a way that encourages them while redirecting their actions. Through the years, parents indicated they wanted more practical strategies for parenting, resulting in FEC introducing many new and innovative, evidence based materials to our repertoire. Our program committee is continually reviewing material for relevance and effectiveness.
Since 1976, FEC's Board, staff, parent educators and many volunteers work consistently to bring non-punitive, non-adversarial, proactive, collaborative, skill-building, and relationship-enhancing strategies to families in Peel and beyond. We are committed to continuously bringing evidence-based tools and skills to families in our parent-to-parent manner.
