Children develop and learn at different speeds. Some children may struggle with learning even when they are highly motivated at school.   We all have unique personalities and different ways of learning. It is just a matter of discovering what works best for your child.  Consider talking to your child’s teacher or the school counsellor.

A good approach when devising a homework strategy is to wait until the two of you are calm, cooperative and not angry. And remember, what works for one child may not work for the other.

As a parent it is important that we refuel.  Do your best to keep your body healthy and make time for a regular exercise routine, such as walking.  Remember to eat a healthy diet and to get enough sleep.

Spend most of your time observing and commenting on what your child does right. This builds self-esteem which leads to more courage and successes.

Help your child be a team player. Support their learning of how to be a part of the family. This teaches cooperation and your child will feel like they belong. They will learn that being a part of a group is fun.

It may be overwhelming to reflect on the changes and loss the pandemic has brought and what is still to come.  Take things one day at a time.

Try not to let Covid-19 dampen your festive spirits this year.  Schedule a family meeting and get your children involved in planning a holiday season that can still be safe, joyful and memorable.  Establish a new tradition.

An understanding of temperament will help you support your child’s emotional needs, foster good behaviour, and minimize power struggles and temper tantrums.

Encouragement recognizes effort rather than accomplishment. A child does not have to win the game, score the goal, obtain the highest grade, land the main part in a play, or win the competition for you to encourage them.
