Course Introduction

PunjabI Content

Welcome to Family Education Centre’s and Punjabi Community Health Services’ joint e-learning course, New to Canada? Balancing Canadian Parenting and Traditional Values. This program is available in Punjabi and English.

After coming to Canada, there are many new experiences for your entire family such as finding a home, finding work, settling into a new community, finding a suitable school for your children, understanding the laws related to child-rearing and the cultural differences between your home country and Canada. Knowing that you need to deal with all these things, we also want to encourage you to take time to parent, communicate and set aside a bit of time to have fun with your children!

First, welcome!

Second, take a deep breath because even though things are very stressful as you settle in, life will get better.

As a father or mother or grandparent do you feel that your children/grandchildren:

  • Watch too much TV or spend too much time gaming or on their devices?
  • Have stopped talking to you?
  • Don’t listen to you?
  • Don’t eat their food?
  • Are getting in trouble at home and in school?
  • Don’t get to bed on time or up on time?
  • Are not acting responsibly?

In this one-of-a-kind e-learning course, you will meet real parents, grandparents and children who have experienced the transition from parenting in their place of origin to parenting in Canada and have maintained and grown their healthy parent-child relationships. Their stories are unscripted and real.
